Weird icebreaker questions
Weird icebreaker questions work for a reason that has nothing to do with being weird: they have no correct answer. Ask a group “what’s your favourite colour” and everyone gives a socially safe answer in the same shape. Ask “do you think fish know it’s raining?” and there is no safe answer available, so people say what they actually think — and that is the entire goal of an icebreaker.
These are sorted by how much room they need. The first group is quick and strange, fine for a two-minute meeting warm-up. The middle group makes people pause before answering, which is good for small groups. The unhinged hypotheticals at the end are conversation engines — expect one of them to derail ten minutes, so only use those when you have the ten minutes to spare.

Facilitator tip
Weird questions need a fast pass rule more than any other kind. Say “pass is fine, no explanation needed” before you ask, then actually let people pass without comment. A strange question with a genuine escape hatch reads as playful; the same question without one reads as a test — and the people most likely to be put off are the quiet ones you were trying to draw out.
Frequently asked questions
What are good weird icebreaker questions for adults?+
The best ones are strange about the world rather than strange about the person. “Do you think fish know it’s raining?” and “what’s an inanimate object you feel genuinely bad for?” are odd but completely safe to answer in front of colleagues. Avoid weird questions that probe personal history, bodies, or relationships — those read as intrusive rather than playful, especially with a group that has not worked together long.
Do weird icebreakers work with a group that has never met?+
They work better than deep questions but worse than this-or-that questions. With total strangers, start with one-word answers to build a floor of participation, then move to a weird question once everyone has spoken at least once. Weird questions need a small amount of existing safety, because they ask people to be a little silly in public.
How is a weird icebreaker different from a funny one?+
A funny question is trying to get a laugh; a weird question is trying to get a real answer. Weird questions tend to produce longer, more interesting conversations because there is no punchline to reach for — people have to actually think. If you want energy, pick funny. If you want the group to learn something about each other, pick weird.
